Todays' Slavery
In todays world, there is more slavery than there ever has been before. Slavery is not spoken about and few people know it still exists today. Slavery in todays world is now at a staggering 30 to 46 million people trapped in the slavery cycle and almost 1 million of them are transported across several international borders part of the Black Market every year. 70% of todays slaves are female and are involved in sexual exploitation since the age of 6. Slaves in the modern world are cheated of sleep, time off, the ability to speak freely or go out alone and identity and documents such as passports, birth certificates and more. These slaves are bullied, sexually abused, allowed access to the suitable amount of food, clothing and medical attention and are victims to bounded labour/debt bondage.
Around 13.9 million slaves are worked in India and are working in garment factories and millions females of all ages are involved in commercial sex and prostitution. Many slaves are apart of human trafficking, manual labour and domestic servitude. Slaves used to work in plantations, cotton mills and in the fields as a peasant. But now slaves are forced to work in mines, factories, ships, farms, building sites, hotels/motels and private homes. Slaves now sleep and work in the same building no where to escape their master due to the tight restrictions set and the security that is surrounding you. Even if you were able to escape, you are normally far away from home and are left with no money, documents or ID to buy tickets, prove identity or get a place to stay. Slaves that run away barely have enough clothes on them to protect them from the elements. Many run away slaves are forced to become homeless or returning from where they ran from facing terrible punishments and falling back into the slavery cycle where they think they are better off than on the streets due to the lack of essentials in the free world. Almost 2.5 million slaves were being trafficked into 137 different countries from 127 countries all over the world. This practice is called human trafficking and is one big part of the worlds modern day slavery. Human trafficking otherwise known as people smuggling is a huge issue in todays world and too many people are being sucked into the trafficking rollercoaster. Human trafficking is the trade of humans, most commonly for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labor, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others. A slave today would cost approximately $121,712.11 in Australian money which pays $67, 617.84 more than an average slave did in 1800. 80% of this human trafficking is just sexual exploitation alone. The remaining 20% is manual labour on fields and in factories.
In todays world, there are many organisations making a change to this concern such as the Home Alone campaign, the Cotton Crimes campaign, the Victim Protection campaign, Anti Slavery and Walk Free. These campaign help todays slaves find help and are able to break the cycle of a lifetime of slavery, giving men, women and children a normal life once again. Slavery now generates around 33 billion dollars a year so putting an end to all slavery is a big project but it is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately.
